About

Margaret Barber

I’m Southern by birth and continue living here (Montgomery, AL) by choice. Nature and my surroundings are the basis for my work’s inspiration…maybe an influence of my grandparents’ German, Irish and Cajun French heritage, of farm memories and middle-class life in Jackson, MS, in the ‘70s all rolled up, makes me who I am.

Textures are specific to my work and are achieved through slip trailing and stamping. Stamps are carved by my hands. Pieces are made of a smooth white stoneware body using slabs to form pots, as well as throwing pieces on the wheel from a lump of clay. Colored and natural terra sigillatas, glazes and underglazes are applied at different times throughout the process to add texture and color. Most of the surface decoration exhibits a natural or botanical motif. Each piece is one of a kind, and expresses a personality of its own.

I struggle to do my best with this gift of life. I’m thankful that I have the pleasure of creating things others might enjoy.
